One Bubble Too Many
The last berry rolled through a narrow gap and stopped behind a crate. Boome looked at it. Then at Zuzu, who was still straightening a slightly crooked stone on the path.
A tiny grin appeared. One water bubble slipped into exactly the right spot. Perfect. Although a second bubble might move the crate just a little farther.
Zuzu looked up as the second bubble touched the ground. Two eyes narrowed. Boome blinked, trying to look as though this was simply a very interesting place to stand.
Splash! Water flew, the crate bumped aside, and the berry landed squarely in a shallow puddle. Both friends stared. A single drop fell from the top of Boome’s head.
Zuzu sighed and nudged a clean leaf forward. Boome rescued the berry, set it on the leaf and divided it in two. This time, Boome waited for Zuzu to choose first.
Somewhere beyond the village, a very faint bell rang. Both friends turned. That bell had been quiet for a very long time.
